North American specialist contracting business, Lagan US, Inc choose AssetTagz to manage its plant and equipment.
Lagan US, Inc were looking for a solution to improve its plant & equipment management.
Lagan US is primarily involved in surfacing, working as a federal contractor on high-profile airfield improvement projects, most notably the ongoing resurfacing of the main runway, taxiways and intersections of the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Its surfacing equipment includes asphalt pavement equipment, pavers, rollers, material transfer units and other ancillary specialist airfield paving equipment.
“We needed to take control of the management of this equipment.“ explains Norman Halliday, Commercial Director at Lagan US. “Using spreadsheets for much of the process can mean a lot of manual intervention and time lags in getting information to the relevant parts of the business.
In particular, we focused our search on equipment inspection and maintenance features, workflows, mobile capabilities, and safety and compliance. Through my research and involvement in this project, it became evident that AssetTagz is a leading provider of such asset management solutions with a proven track record of success. We looked at several solutions, but ultimately the seamless integration with our incumbent ERP system, COiNS, meant AssetTagz had the clear advantage.”
Lagan SCG went live with the project in early April 2024 and, less than a month in, already its key equipment is now being fully managed through AssetTagz and the COiNS Hire-Desk and plant control module:
- Plant is picked at the depot using an electronic pick list and is ‘on-hired’ to the relevant project site.
- Before plant can be on-hired, an inspection takes place to certify it is in good condition.
- Once the equipment arrives on site, an electronic GRN (Goods Received Note) ensures that head office is notified when the equipment has arrived and that it is in good order.
- Daily pre and post shift checks immediately pick up on any defects and inform the relevant department for resolution.
- Once equipment is finished with, it is ‘off-hired’, which notifies the transport department so that transport can be arranged to collect it in a timely fashion.
- Once the equipment is back at the depot, a further inspection takes place to check for any damage incurred.
“We are seeing immediate benefits from the system. Already our defect management process has taken a significant leap forward. Whereas before it could take anything from a couple of days up to a week to find out about a problem with a machine, head office now gets notified of any defects as soon as an inspection takes place, so a job requisition can be raised. As well as the improvement to operational efficiency, this also means a huge step towards our safety compliance goals.“
The future
“Given the tangible benefits already seen, I have reached out to our counterparts in the UK. Our shared interest in specialist plant hire solutions is an encouraging sign for potential collaboration in the UK in the future.”
